Reduced AWS billing by 50% for LifeSignals, an end-to-end bioweb platform.

LifeSignals · Remote patient monitoring

One monolithic AWS account holding every workload, in a regulated environment. We split it, right-sized it, and halved the bill.

  • 50%

    Lower monthly AWS bill

  • 50%

    Additional saving on compute costs

The opportunity

One account, every workload, and a compliance regime watching.

LifeSignals builds healthcare solutions for Holter monitoring, in-hospital and remote patient monitoring-a highly regulated environment with strict compliance requirements and a large IT team spread across applications and services.

All of it sat in a single monolithic AWS account, which made the estate difficult to manage and to secure. Delivery suffered in parallel: long build times, inconsistent deployments, and developers integrating changes only at release. Monitoring was reactive, so issues reached end users before anyone saw them.

One monolithic AWS account

Every workload and service shared it, complicating management and security.

Oversized EC2 instances

Instances carried more compute power than the workloads actually needed.

Long builds, inconsistent deploys

Releases were delayed and varied between environments.

Monitoring was reactive

Issues were found after they had already reached end users.

The impact

The bill halved, and the estate became governable.

  • 50% off the monthly bill

Right-sizing plus reserved instances instead of on-demand, and unused resources terminated.

  • An account per department

Separate accounts per department and application, matched to compliance requirements.

  • Governed from a master account

A central point of control keeps every sub-account compliant with security policy.

  • Proactive monitoring

Real-time alerts and reports on server status, so issues are found before users feel them.

The stack

What it runs on.

Account structure
Multi-account strategy, master account for central governance
Compute optimisation
Amazon EC2 right-sizing, reserved instances
Delivery
CI/CD pipeline automating build, test and deployment
Monitoring
Real-time alerting across servers and edge devices

The road ahead

The estate is separable. That is what keeps it cheap.

With workloads isolated per account and delivery automated, cost and compliance can be measured per team rather than argued about across one shared bill.

  1. 01

    Per-account cost attribution

  2. 02

    Deeper compliance automation

  3. 03

    Wider proactive monitoring coverage
